It all starts with in the newsroom with details on one of the biggest health care fraud cases in American history. Here_s Isabella Rossini with a Naked News Bulletin. Kat the US Justice Department is calling it the largest takedown of its kind. 301 health care workers have been accused of trying to defraud Medicare and other federal health insurance programs to the tune of more than 900 million dollars. More than a thousand law enforcement personnel were involved in the nationwide investigation. The charges run the gamut from conspiracy to commit health care fraud to money laundering. One of the worst offenders was a Detroit clinic that billed 36 million to Medicare. It turned out to be a front for a narcotics diversion scheme. This year_s sweep breaks last year_s record of 243 suspects charged with defrauding the government of 712 million. The International Monetary Fund is urging the US to do something about its alarming rising poverty levels. One in seven Americans now live in poverty. The IMF recommends raising minimum wage rates and offering paid maternity leave to women to encourage them to join the workforce. The agency_s new report isn_t ALL bad news. Overall the American economy is in good shape. The IMF_s projection for US growth was cut to 2.2 percent from an earlier prediction of 2.4 percent but that number_s expected to rebound next year. The new and improved Panama Canal is set to open this Sunday The 5.25 billion dollar expansion is an engineering marvel that took seven years to complete. The expansion doubles the canal_s capacity and will allow even larger ships to pass through its lock gates. It_s expected to help shave 8 billion dollars a year from global maritime costs.
